The Cattlemen’s Beef Board, the Federation of State Beef Councils and the American National CattleWomen, Inc., are presenting the 2007 National Beef Cook-Off.  This year, the 27th National Beef Cook-Off theme is “Seize Life,” which is the essence of the role that beef plays in an active lifestyle.  Prizes totaling $110,000 will be given away, including a $50,000 Grand Prize for the “Best of Beef” winner.

The Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association (KCA) will hold the KCA Annual Convention and Trade Show on January 11, 12 and 13, 2007, at the Lexington Convention Center.   This year’s Convention titled Looking Into the Future, will cover a wide range of issues from forage to muscle profiling.  It will also feature a 70-booth Trade Show that will highlight all aspects of the beef industry – from feed to pharmaceuticals, and a live internet cattle auction where 2,000 to 3,000 head of cattle will be sold from Downtown Lexington.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently released its updated “Guidelines on Nutrition and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention.”  The recommendations place a stronger emphasis on the role of healthy weight and energy balance as part of an overall healthy lifestyle to reduce cancer risk. Previously, ACS has focused on the role of diet in cancer risk.

Kennesaw Farms recently launched a new web site that details the progress of the new development located between Gallatin and Hendersonville in Sumner County.  Kennesaw Farms includes 300 acres of gently rolling hills that once served as the home of winning thoroughbred racehorses.  Developers Tim Wheeler and David Luckey of Kennesaw Farms Development have begun constructing new homes on the historic site in what will be a large mixed-use development.  The new web site is www.kennesawfarms.com .

Red Giant, a full-service advertising, marketing and public relations agency continues to grow in size and billings.  The company moved to new headquarters in July, 2006, and is located at Central Station near downtown. Their new 3,600 square foot office overlooks the Jim Patterson Baseball Stadium.  The company now has 13 employees (up from four in 2004) and realized capitalized billings of $4.2 million in 2005 (An increase of  $1.5 million over 2004).  Red Giant recently launched their new web site at www.RGIANT.com.  The company’s name comes from the fact that a “Red Giant” is a star at its brightest point.

It’s a Kentucky state law that all children entering public schools for the first time must have their eyes examined by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.  A comprehensive exam is different from a screening and includes several tests; including a dilation, a visual acuity test, an ocular alignment test, binocularity, color vision testing and an evaluation of the refractive state of the eyes.

Piranha Pictures, a Nashville-based film and video production company recently finished production on two new Captain D’s commercials called “Chicken & Pasta Bowls” and “Catfish.”  O2 Ideas in Birmingham, AL created the commercials that were shot at Agility Studios in Nashville. Piranha Pictures director, Jeff Steinborn shot and directed the commercials over four days of shooting.

With the arrival of warm weather, everyone is outdoors.  When most people go out to mow the lawn, jump-start the car or play in a sporting event, the last thing they think about is their eyes.  Even the sun can damage the eyes, so it’s important that consumers think about eye safety in all of its forms, and that means wearing protective eye gear.  Fireworks eye safety is especially important this time of year.  Last year, an estimated 6,600 injuries were treated in emergency rooms during the one month period surrounding the Fourth of July.

Continuing a long tradition of community involvement across the country, Celebrity Kids Portrait Studio will sponsor a balloon in the U.S. Bank Great Balloon Race this year.  Their pilot, Chase Donner, who is 19 years old, was named the youngest licensed commercial balloon pilot in the country in 2005, and Rookie of the Year at the U.S. Balloon Nationals is Baton Rouge in 2004. His brother, Nick Donner, won the U.S. Bank Great Balloon Race last year with the Tran Orthodontics balloon.

Piranha Pictures web site was named one of the Top 25 in the world by Earthcam.com, a consortium of live web cams from all over the world.   Piranha Pictures launched their official web site on 12/01/05 with an i Sight camera trained on the company’s mascots – eight red-belly piranha swimming freely in a 125-gallon aquarium.  The website, a first for the company which opened its doors 10 years ago, also includes demo reels, production news, the company history and brief biographical sketches of key personnel.

AST ElectroFin, Inc., a Louisville based corporation that has developed e-coating technology for HVAC and refrigeration systems, has opened a new plant in Jacksonville, Texas.  The $5 million facility employs 34 people and plans to open a second shift in 2006, bringing the total staff to 50.  Founded in 1997, ElectroFin is a $10 million company with a projected growth rate of 20 percent for 2006.  ElectroFin currently employees 45 in their Louisville plant and has just added two new sales managers.

There is approximately 29 million Americans that have diabetes and a common misconception among people with diabetes is “If I can see well, there’s nothing wrong with my eyes.”  That’s false confidence.  If you have diabetes, you’re at risk for diabetic retinopathy, even if you don’t have any vision problems.  Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of legal blindness among adults in the United States.  For this reason, National Diabetic Eye Disease Month in November is a reminder to diabetics to have a dilated eye exam every year.

The Kentucky Beef Council (KBC) has announced the winner of the 2005 KY Beef Backer Award for Chain Restaurants.  The winner is Churchill Downs Levy Restaurants and their Executive Chef Gil Logan.  Chef Gil Logan will receive the award on behalf of the Levy Restaurants at Churchill Downs on Friday, September 30 at the Kentucky Proud Cooking dinner at Churchill Downs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.  All proceeds from the dinner will benefit Hurricane Katrina disaster relief.

Central Avenue, will be officially dedicated at a Grand Opening on Tuesday, July 26 from Noon to 1 p.m.  The Grand Opening will mark the completion of a five-year project that involved re-development of the previous 25-acre American Air Filter (AAF) site.  Speakers include Mayor Jerry Abramson who will cut the ribbon; Fred Faulkner, president of Faulkner Hinton; Joanne Berryman, Senior Vice President of Frazier Rehab; and Reed Boone, grandson of the late Bill Reed, founder of AAF.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month and a good time to get your eyes checked for this serious disease. Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve, responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain, is damaged. It can be associated with elevated pressure within the eye and could lead to vision loss. It may begin with the loss of peripheral vision and then advance to a reduction in central vision. Glaucoma can potentially lead to blindness.

There are approximately 10.3 million Americans that have diabetes and more than half are at risk for vision loss because they do not know they have the disease.  More than one third of those diagnosed with diabetes do not adhere to vision care guidelines by obtaining a dilated eye exam every year. So, as part of November’s Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, Eye doctors across the country are urging Americans with diabetes to have a dilated eye exam every year.

  • The disease is NOT contagious – cows can’t catch it from contact with other cows and humans cannot catch it from contact with cattle.  It can only be spread by the consumption of brain tissue/spinal cord/retinas from diseased animals.

There are approximately 16 million Americans that have diabetes and half are at risk for vision loss because they do not know they have the disease.  "This is a tragedy waiting to happen because people with diabetes can develop a complication called diabetic retinopathy, which blinds over 8,000 Americans each year," said Dr. Brian Kritchman, ophthalmologist with the Taustine Eye Center. "But vision loss from diabetic retinopathy can be prevented if it's caught and treated in time."

The Kentucky Beef Council has contributed a matching funds grant of $40,000 to the University of Kentucky for a zinc research study titled, “Protection against Atherosclerosis by Dietary Zinc.”  The project will focus on why adequate dietary zinc (derived from daily beef consumption) is necessary to protect against atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases.  It is estimated that 73 percent of Americans do not get enough zinc.
