Crisis Communication Plans

“Tell it all, tell it fast and tell the truth.

This is the golden rule of crisis communication.”

A crisis is any situation that threatens the integrity or reputation of your company or organization, usually brought on by adverse or negative media attention.  Many companies or organizations don’t really think a lot about a Crisis Communication Plan until they need one.  By that time, it’s usually too late and mistakes have been made.  It’s imperative to have a Crisis Communication Plan ready, and to review it at least once a year.  A good Crisis Communication Plan identifies key topics or issues that could present problems to the organization and establishes both Core and Secondary Teams.  These Teams implement a well thought out plan and develop appropriate responses during a crisis situation.

The Crisis Communication Plan is an invaluable tool when you get that news media call at 1 a.m.  If prepared, your Crisis Communication Team can go into action and tell it all, tell it fast and tell the truth.  If the news media and your key audiences get the information they need quickly, you minimize rumors and restore order and confidence in your product.
